Playoff dollars could spark calls to pay players

NEW YORK (AP) ? The new playoff system means big money for major college football, as much as a half-billion dollars per year just in television rights alone.

That has Texas coach Mack Brown ? among others ? wondering if some of that windfall should be heading the players way.

"In my opinion, with the amount of money the playoff will generate, I hope we can revisit the student-athlete stipend," Brown tweeted soon after the new, semifinal format was approved by university presidents Tuesday in Washington.

"It will be a very lucrative event and those young people are the ones that make it all possible," he added.

Even before the plan had a presidential seal of approval, a group of former and current athletes was pushing for some of the newfound wealth to be spent on player safety and health ? an issue that becomes more important as the season expands.

The current Bowl Championship Series television deal with ESPN, plus the Rose Bowl's separate agreement with ABC, pay the major college football schools about $155 million per year. That money is distributed unevenly throughout college football, with power conferences such as the Big Ten and Big 12 getting more for their members than others such as the Mountain West and Conference USA.

The commissioners working on the playoff system have been reluctant to speculate on exactly how much the TV rights for it will be worth, but they all agree it'll be at least double.

Also, the new national title game will go to the highest-bidding city, which will pour millions more into the coffers of FBS schools. Officials in Arlington, Texas, home of the Cotton Bowl, and Atlanta, where the Chick-fil-A Bowl is played, are already lining up to make a pitch.

West Virginia Athletic Director Oliver Luck said that, to those who want the players to receive more money, all that playoff cash "is at least one more arrow in their quiver."

While NCAA President Mark Emmert has argued strongly against paying football players like professionals, in a manner that South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has been pushing the past two years, the fight over raising student compensation already has started.

Last year, new legislation was approved that would have allowed schools to offer a $2,000 stipend, in addition to their scholarship, toward what the NCAA calls the full cost-of-attendance.

But the measure was tossed into limbo after more than 100 schools asked for an override vote. Critics were concerned about whether all schools would be able to afford it, especially with so many facing budget crunches in the economic downturn. Also, there is concern that the schools which can afford to pay the extra stipend will gain an advantage in recruiting.

Still, Emmert has said he would still like it passed, and he praised the approval of a new postseason format to replace the BCS.

"I commend the BCS Presidential Oversight Committee on its leadership to move to a playoff model," he said. "I remain confident that as the details of the new format are determined in the coming weeks, presidents will continue to keep student-athlete well-being, both in the classroom and on the field, front of mind."

Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said it's too soon to start talking about what do with the extra money.

"I think there's still a lot of work to be vetting out, and how the revenue is going to be distributed is the first step in that," he said. "We haven't gotten that far along in the process but I expect over the course of the next academic year we will do that in meetings."

Luck said he had been telling his bosses, even before the new playoff format, that they should start budgeting for the increased cost of scholarships.

"I always kind of figured it was inevitable," he said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

Cutting back would seem to be off the board at this point, Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez said. With teams being asked to play as many as 15 games in a season now, he said there better not be any more talk about reducing the 85-scholarship limit.

"Any talk about that going forward has to cease," he said. "You're going to need more players to get through a season healthy."

Washington State coach Mike Leach said while he has no problem with giving players a bigger scholarship, maybe the extra money could go toward more scholarships.

"Give everybody five more scholarships, five more opportunities for guys to go to school," he said.

The National College Players Association, an advocacy group made up of 17,000 current and former Division I student-athletes, isn't looking for players to be paid as much as it would like more money spent to keep them safe.

Their point is the national title winner is going to start camp in August 2014 and finish the season on Jan. 12, 2015, with a regular season, conference title game, semifinal and final in between. Not so long ago, NFL teams had only a 14-game regular season.

The group's president, former UCLA football player Ramogi Huma, was in Washington and arrived at the hotel where the presidents and commissioners a few minutes before the meeting started.

"Our universities shouldn't add extra games without adding extra protections to minimize the head trauma risks associated with contact sports," Huma said.

There has been a growing interest in flat London roofing across the globe and specifically in London, the heart of all leading flat designs in the world. Good roofing designs act as a good selling and renting strategy to potential buyers and renters. The real estate in London has recorded a great rise in the number of constructing and London roofing service companies. Roofing can either be new or repaired.

New roofs are the ones that put on new buildings ones that have just been constructed. Repaired roofs are the ones that are put on already existing buildings mostly renovated buildings. Roof repairs are made to buildings that are either leaking, ones that the owner may think they deserve a new outlook or even the fact the changing climatic conditions such that extreme heating or cooling. The destruction of roofs is likely to be caused by factors like: damage caused by strong winds, poor maintenance such as lack of protective paint, weathering that may be caused by air pollution or even acid rains and improper design such as poor roof structures, poor elasticity designs caused by contraction and expansion. In appropriate fitting like lack of enough basement support and cracks on the roof are additional possible causes of roof damage.

In order to rectify the defects of faulty London roofing service, a research by the industry players was conducted and asbestos roof repairs was found to be a reliable London roofing service material. Asbestos roof repairs are naturally occurring fibrous materials on roofs or surfaces of blocks. Commercial exploitation of asbestos roof repairs was carried out in late 19th century and its most application took place in between 1950-1970.This materials used back then are now being replaced with more developed and advanced ones.

The use of asbestos roof repairs as a flat London roofing material however comes with an attachment of liabilities. They cause serious health problems such as lung cancers and sores on the chest lining. Lung cancer has led to a number of multiple deaths with an average ranging up to 3500 annually. Those prone to attack by these materials are those who often come into contact with the fibers. This people are mainly workers from the construction companies and individuals such as those drilling, cutting or sawing the fibrous materials. The scientific research on the hazardous nature or the fibers is underway although medical reports have proved that they are hazardous. Measures to control the health risk due to the fibers have been developed such as laws to illegalize the use of the fibers.

This law however effective it may be does not completely solve the problem as many fibers that were installed in the past still exist and continue causing the lung cancers. The greatest pull back to the effective control of fibers is that they have been utilized in diverse ways and have been installed in home appliances. The use of asbestos roof repairs should be completely weeded out and an alternate treatment or good disposal of the fibers developed so as to reduce the number of deaths from the fiber infection. The best asbestos roof repairs with the affordable price at London roofing service.

Quick Brown Fox: Love letters

Mazel tov -?congratulations - to?

Gila Green for?her first novel contract!

Dear Brian,

Your blog has often encouraged me to continue on my search for publication when I was about to give up or at least take an extended break. I am happy to announce that my first novel, a futuristic satire, King of the Class, about a post-civil war Israel has been accepted to Vancouver press: Now or Never Publishing due for a spring 2013 release. Thank you for creating this online community of Canadian writers, so that even ex-pats in faraway Israel can receive encouragement. For information about submitting to Now or Never Publishing, see here. Hi, Brian.
Great news: my short story, "With Regret" won first prize in the Elora Writers' Festival Short Fiction Contest. I owe much of the success for the story to two sources: criticism by my fellow scribblers at the Brampton Writers Guild, and especially to your workshop on editing and revision which I attended in January. Thanks for the invaluable instruction on ripping out and rebuilding, renovator-style, and rewriting an already perfect story to make it better.
Please let me know when you will be putting on an Intensive or Extreme writing course somewhere west of Yonge Street ? I?d love to attend.
Regards,
Michael Joll

The Extreme Creative Writing courses are both full for the fall, but the slightly less intensive Next Step in Creative Writing has spaces open in the ?Thursday afternoon course in Mississauga (details here) and in the Thursday evening course in Georgetown (details here). The last one I attended was at Westdale library (which is kind of funny since I now work there!) and you had a local lawyer turned romance author come to speak to us. At the time I was trying to get my erotica work published. I thought it was a pipe dream.

Still, I worked on it slowly over the past few years and had a number of short stories published. Then this year HarperCollins UK launched their new erotica imprint the same week Fifty Shades of Grey blew the erotica market wide open. Their editor asked me to be a contributing author. I published a few more short stories with them and now they've offered me a contract for a single author title. It is due out March 2013.

I couldn?t wait for this heatwave to start.? Really.? All year long I?ve wanted to sweat.? That deep down burn that flows through my body.? Sweat flowing from my brow into my eyes, my back soaked on the leather seats of my car.? Yeah, you know what I?m ?talking? about.? A real summer heat wave.? You cannot escape.? It?s everywhere.? An egg could be fried on the sidewalk- that kind of heat.

Fortunately I?m here to cool off your frazzled demeanor.? What is that look on your face?? You don?t believe me?

My good friends you are in luck.? I?ve created at this hour of 9:56 am on Thursday a most beguiling of cocktails.? One that will, as I like to put it, mystify and challenge even the most robust of imbibers.? This one my friends garners a 5 out of 5.? Danger Level 5.? I?m getting numb just smelling it.

The ice is as important as the rest of the cocktail.? I recommend spending about 12 bucks on a silicone ice cube tray from Williams-Sonoma.? True there are dozens of other items for sale in the store that I lust over, but for this cocktail, I need a large ice cube that melts- very, very slowly.? Ice is one of my favorite topics.

I?m a fan of liquors from the Near East.? I mean Greece and Turkey.? Raki in Turkey, Ouzo in Greece?

The Moors enjoyed liqueurs and preparations that used anise seeds.? In their attempted conquest of the world, the liquors that they enjoyed in turn influenced others cultures and peoples in the world.? Hence you find Raki in Turkey, Ouzo in Greece, Pastis in France and? Aquavit from the Scandinavian countries.? But what does Aquavit have to do with anise?? Is it because anise is a seed and caraway is a seed as well?? Sure, it?s a stretch, but in flavor transmittal, a stretch is fantastic.. Anise and Caraway just work together.

Another hidden ingredient, at least in the Near East is Rose Water.? The essence of roses can be quite sensual.? They stimulate the feelings of eroticism. I love rose in a cocktail, especially the rose simple syrup from Royal Rose.? I?ve fallen hard for their syrups, but for the summer- in my opinion, nothing goes better with Tenneyson Absinthe than rose syrup.

Blueberries from Driscoll?s.? Organically grown are the base for my cocktail.? I?ve taken these absolutely ravishing blueberries and muddled them with some of the Royal Rose simple syrup of roses until they stain the side of the mixing glass with their juices.? The aroma of blue along with rose is intoxicating to say the least.

Tenneyson Absinthe, made in France with care is clear as a glass window in the perfume grade, cut glass bottle.? But add some seltzer water and the formerly pristine color takes on a shade of cream and blue fruits.? The Aquavit from House Spirits in Portland, Oregon is a hidden Umami flavor.? You sense it.? It?s there.. but soon, very soon you will feel no pain at all.

It?s now 10:32 am.? The air is brisk but steadily heating up.? Soon the leaves outside will begin to wilt.? It?s a true heat wave. I cannot wait to sip this cocktail in the blaze of the summer heat.

You will crave one too.? Crave is not even the word I seek.? Yearn is better.? Hunger.? Thirst.

Bitters should finish this cocktail.? A punch of depth to center that little third eye in the middle of your forehead.? Why the third eye?? So you can see.? Because with your eyes closed (and they will be soon) you?ll need some way to guide you on your spiritual path to enlightenment. My friend Bill York at Bitter End Bitters makes a perfectly respectable Moroccan Bitters.? Woven with the flavors of the Middle East, this salubrious squirt of bitters it more than able to stand up to the task of binding the Absinthe to the Aquavit.

A splash of seltzer water will finish.? And keep you from walking into doors.

One cocktail at a time.? By my patient hand.? Cheers and stay cool if you are able.

DEA Honduras raid part of aggressive drug strategy

In this May 23, 2012 file photo, holes made by the Honduran army to disable a clandestine airstrip used by drug traffickers are seen on the outskirts of Ahuas, La Mosquitia region, Honduras. A U.S. embassy spokesman in Honduras said on Sunday that a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent has shot and killed a suspected drug trafficker on Saturday June 23 during a raid in the area, the first time that a DEA agent has killed someone during an operation since the agency began deploying agents several years ago to accompany local law enforcement personnel on drug raids in Latin America. (AP) ? A U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent who killed a suspected drug trafficker during a raid in a remote region of Honduras was part of an aggressive new enforcement strategy that has sharply increased the interception of illegal drug flights.

The mission, called Operation Anvil, is run with six U.S. State Department helicopters, as well as a special team of DEA agents who work with Honduran police to move more quickly and pursue suspicious flights, according to a U.S. official in Honduras who couldn't be named for security reasons.

In little more than two months since the operation started, it has intercepted four flights. That compares to only seven from mid-2010 to the end of 2011 ? less than one every two months.

The U.S. official said about 100 flights of suspicious origin come into Honduras every year.

With the new operation, Honduran and U.S. drug agents follow every flight they detect of unknown origin and work with non-U.S. contract pilots who don't have the restrictive rules of engagement that the U.S. military do.

The area of Burs Laguna, where the DEA says an agent shot a drug suspect as he was reaching for his gun Saturday, is part of the remote Mosquito region that is dotted with clandestine airstrips and a vast network of rivers for carrying drugs to the coast.

Saturday's incident marked the first time that a DEA agent has killed someone in Central America since the agency began deploying specially trained agents several years ago to accompany local law enforcement personnel on all types of drug raids throughout the region, said DEA spokeswoman Dawn Deaden.

A May 11 raid by Honduran police with DEA advisers, also under Operation Anvil, killed four people and wounded four others, whom locals said were innocent civilians traveling the river at night. Honduran and DEA officials have said people on the boat fired first and the lawmen were acting in self-defense. The DEA said none of its agents fired their guns in that incident.

Operation Anvil also netted cocaine shipments on May 6 in the Mosquito and June 13 in Olancho state, totaling more three quarters of a ton of cocaine in about two months.

The weekend raid was a "great example of positive U.S.-Honduran cooperation," said U.S. Embassy spokesman Stephen Plosive in Tegucigalpa.

But the aggressive tactics have come under fire from human rights groups and some political interests in Washington, especially since the May 11 attack.

The Committee of Relatives of the Disappeared in Honduras filed a complaint in May with the regional prosecutor in the Gracias a Dios region where the attack occurred, claiming human rights violations by Honduran and U.S. authorities. The group's investigation concluded that the dead and wounded were innocent civilians.

American University anthropology professor Adrienne Pine sent a letter signed by 40 Honduran scholars and former government officials, and supported by 300 academics in 29 countries, to President Barack Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton earlier this month, demanding the U.S. cease support for the Honduran military and police.

"It's really troubling," Pine said Sunday. "It's absolutely not appropriate for U.S. law enforcement to be killing other people in other countries."

Operation Anvil is part of an overall increase in U.S. efforts in Honduras, where drug trafficking and murder rates have spiked in the last year or so. With 82 murders per 100,000 people, the U.N. lists Honduras as the most dangerous country in the world. Its national police force is rife with corruption, with some calling it one of country's main organized crime operations.

Since international crackdowns on drug trafficking began in Mexico and the Caribbean, Central America has become the crossing point for 84 percent of all U.S.-bound cocaine, according to Joint Task Force-Bravo, a U.S. military installation in Comayagua, Honduras.

Air and sea shipments of cocaine to Honduras have risen dramatically since 2006, when less than 10 percent of the U.S.-bound cocaine went through the country then. By 2011 the portion had jumped to more than 30 percent. Honduras has been the main landing point for such drug flights from South America since 2009.

The U.S. is increasing its DEA personnel in Tegucigalpa from four to seven, the U.S. official said. Another eight to 10 agents are stationed in the north as part of the Foreign-deployed Advisory Support Teams, known as FAST, to train Hondurans and work on the State Department helicopters. The U.S. also recently established a full Narcotics Affairs Section in the embassy for the first time and is seeking its first extradition of an accused Honduran drug lord, Carlos Arnold Lobo, under a constitutional amendment passed by Honduras in January allowing its nationals to be extradited to the U.S.

The U.S. Embassy could not immediately say how much more is being spent in Honduras as a result, as a lot of the funds come from the Central America Regional Security Initiative, about $100 million a year for efforts across the region. The State helicopters, for example, are officially allocated to Guatemala even though they're now working in Honduras.

U.S. officials, including with the DEA, have done background checks and have trained 42 Honduran national police to work on drug-trafficking cases alongside DEA agents and U.S. military at Joint Task Force-Bravo.

Until April, the DEA and Hondurans had relied mainly on Joint Task Force-Bravo helicopters to chase illicit flights. But because of the rules of engagement for the U.S. military in Honduras, they could only fire back to protect themselves and their equipment, and not to protect the DEA or Honduran police who can come under fire in the field.

"These helicopters are different in that they're not U.S. pilots and they have the ability to fire in self-defense and in the protection of ground elements, where JTF Bravo, they're limited in rules of engagement," the U.S. official said.

The weekend's operation occurred around 12:30 a.m., when a U.S. agent and Honduran National Police arrested four suspects and seized 792 pounds (360 kilograms) of cocaine, Plosive said. He said six other people were arrested later on suspicion of aiding the smuggling operation.

The incident took place about 12 miles (20 kilometers) away from Hausa, the site of the May 11 shooting, according to Hausa mayor Lucia Baquedano. No one from the town was involved, Baquedano said, adding that at least 11 clandestine airstrips sit between Ahuas and Brus Laguna.

The operation was similar to the May 11 raid, according to another U.S. official who wasn't authorized to speak on the record. The previous operation involved four helicopters, two in the air and two that landed, and included Guatemalan contract pilots and Honduran police and military, with the DEA working as advisors.

People in the helicopters tracking the flight early Saturday saw about 40 people transporting drugs from the plane, the official said. They were intercepted by law enforcement about a half mile from the landing strip, where the seizure, arrests and shooting took place. Most of the 40 people scattered.

The DEA said it would not release the name of the agent who killed the suspect.

"During the operation, a fifth suspect attempted to engage the police team with a firearm and was shot by a DEA agent in self-defense," Posivak said. "The suspect subsequently died at the scene. There were no other injuries or fatalities."

Ministry of Security spokesman Ivan Mejia said Sunday that that the Honduran government has sent police, a judge, a prosecutor and medical examiners to the scene to investigate.

Investigations also continue into the May 11 Ahuas shooting, with confusion remaining about what actually happened.

Daily Breeze Track and Field Coach of the Year: Serra's Lori Smith-Thompson

Click photo to enlarge

Serra track and field coach Lori Smith-Thompson

Serra track and field coach Lori Smith-Thompson saw an opportunity and wanted to make sure her teams knew exactly what was at stake.

Twice Smith-Thompson called team meetings before Serra's biggest meets of the season - the CIF Southern Section finals and the CIF State finals.

The Serra war room featured a whiteboard full of projections and tangible goals for each meet. Each coach gave an impassioned pep talk about the historic opportunity that was within grasp for this talented group.

"It was kind of a tear-jerker, and it was motivating for all of us," Smith-Thompson said. "It was to keep them focused and tell them what we expected.

"Everybody was riled up and ready to make it happen."

Serra swept the CIF Southern Section Division IV team titles at Mount San Antonio College.

Eventually, Smith-Thompson hoisted a CIF State girls team trophy and a CIF State boys team runner-up trophy, posing with her players atop the podium on a toasty night at Buchanan High School in Clovis.

"We really wanted to put our name and our team on the map," said Serra senior Renetia James, a 400-meter state champion who also ran on both winning relays. "I was not leaving that stadium without at least one gold."

Ultimately, the girls captured their third straight CIF Southern Section title and their first CIF State crown. The boys won their sixth straight CIF Southern Section title and came within four points of winning their

second CIF State title.

Serra also had 10 individual CIF champions and six individual state champions.

"It turned out to be a tremendous year for the program, for myself and for the athletes," said Smith-Thompson, the 2012 Daily Breeze Track and Field Coach of the Year.

Injuries had plagued Serra in the past couple of years, but Smith-Thompson made injury prevention a top priority.

Smith-Thompson said she realized most schools don't have the manpower or the resources to handle the daily grind. So Smith-Thompson referred parents to a nutritionist, a chiropractor and a deep tissue specialist.

"We had a parent meeting at the beginning of the year, and I told them we all have to stay on top of injuries," Smith-Thompson said. "The parents are the ones who are going to be driving. They're the ones who had to get them there, so we needed to make sure they knew their options."

Her athletes described her as a task master, not afraid to crack the whip to make sure they were putting in the proper training.

But they also said Smith-Thompson was the first person to congratulate them on a job well done and was always eager to honor their accomplishments.

"I love Coach Lori," said Serra senior Alexis Faulknor, the 2012 Daily Breeze Girls Track Athlete of the Year. "She knows how to handle business and always shows up with her game face. We can be anywhere and she'll keep us going.

"She cares about all of us and works us to be the best we can be."

Adoree' Jackson, the 2012 Daily Breeze Boys Track Athlete of the Year, said Smith-Thompson gave him an extra push in helping him win the state long jump title.

"She taught me things I need to know and the workouts I needed," Jackson said. "She taught me to be a better person and athlete on and off the track. I give a lot of thanks to her for helping me become as fast and explosive as I am now."

Smith-Thompson is quick to credit her Serra coaching staff, a distinguished group that includes sprints coach Chris Faulknor, hurdles coach Derrick Knight and jumps coach Russell Biggs.

"I can call myself the head coach, but it takes a team of people to bring it all together," said Smith-Thompson, who has coached the 2007 IAAF World Youth Team in the Czech Republic and was the team manager for the 2009 IAAF World Youth Team in Italy.

Smith-Thompson also tried to teach her team to be humble and to honor God.

Her athletes also seemed genuine in praising God and with their team prayers.

James said Isaiah 54:17 applies to Serra: "No weapon formed against me shall prosper." They were not going to let injuries or outsiders slow them down.

"I can do all things through Christ," James said.

And through Smith-Thompson as well.
