Fallon, Morgan link brains to mock candidates

By Chiderah Monde

Monday night on?"The Daily Show," a?tiara-clad Jon Stewart attempted to understand his role as head of Stephen Colbert's Super PAC, and what to do with?its funds.?Since?he and?Colbert?can't coordinate with each other, Stewart enlisted the help of chef Mario Battali. Somehow, they came to the conclusion that they need to bird-feed an egg frittata. (Caution: the last few seconds of the "Daily Show" footage is pretty gross.)

Much to his chagrin, Colbert found out that he's not allowed to be a write-in candidate for the South Carolina primary. But, there's still a man in the running, he announced Monday night on?"Colbert Report," that stands for true "Americanimity": former candidate Herman Cain. ? ?

And in case you missed it,?over the?weekend the?Super PAC released?its first attack ad -- one that portrays current frontrunner Romney as "Mitt the Ripper," serial?killer of corporations. ? ?

On "Late Show," host David Letterman dedicated his Top 10 list to now?former GOP candidate Jon Huntsman, entitled "Top 10 things people said when they heard Huntsman was dropping out of the race." Among the best ones: "Does this mean we can bring back Herman Cain?" and, my personal favorite, "He should have Tebowed more." ?

Sticking it with Huntsman,?Jimmy Fallon didn't think the candidate's departure would make much of a difference. Not having Huntsman on the campaign trail ... will be like having Huntsman on the campaign trail, he said.? ?

Then, in a?game of "Brainstorm," Fallon and?special guest Piers Morgan laughed at the expense of a few other GOPers. The rules required "Jeopardy!"-style questions and answers?from the two players, so Morgan threw out the phrase "warning, may cause drowsiness," and Fallon responded with "What does it say on the back of Mitt Romney."? ?

In the next round?the phrase was?"American Horror Story," and?Fallon answered,?"What is Rick Perry's presidential campaign." ?

Even Piers Morgan had to laugh at that one.

Rare caterpillar-like horizontal earthquake discovered

Imagine that, as you sit at your desk or in your living room reading this story, your entire city suddenly snaps a foot to the south.

That's what happened to the city of Kohat, Pakistan, in 1992. A magnitude-6.0 earthquake moved a 30-square-mile (80-square-kilometer) swath of land one foot (30 centimeters) horizontally in a split second, leveling buildings and killing more than 200 people.

The area hadn't experienced many temblors before, making the earthquake an unusual occurrence. Now, 20 years later, geologists have used satellite and seismic data to track down the cause of that rare quake ? an equally rare type of fault.

"The pattern we saw was absolutely a dead ringer for a horizontal fault," said Roger Bilham, a geophysicist at the University of Colorado at Boulder. "But here's the problem: How do you get a horizontal earthquake?"

Perfectly horizontal

Most earthquakes occur at near-vertical faults, such as the strike-slip San Andreas Fault or the thrust fault that caused the 2011 Japan earthquake. The Kohat Plateau earthquake occurred on a horizontal fault ? something that scientists have rarely, if ever, seen before.

"The fault is like the contact layer between a carpet and the floor beneath it ? perfectly horizontal," Bilham told OurAmazingPlanet.

To understand what happened at Kohat, you need to picture a waterbed, Bilham explained. If the waterbed is sitting on concrete, it's nearly impossible to push. But if you put the waterbed on a slippery surface ? say, an ice rink ? it becomes a little easier to move. It may crumple up at one end, and some patches may get a little stuck, but if you push slowly and surely, you can move the waterbed.

Now imagine that waterbed is the Kohat Plateau, a 3,800-square-mile (10,000-square-km) slab of earth that lies just southwest of the Himalayas. As the Eurasian plate pushes the plateau southward, it slides along (or creeps) on its own sort of ice rink, a lubricating layer of salt separating the plateau from the underlying layer of rock.

Every once in a while, though, a patch of the plateau sticks against the bedrock below. And while the rest of the plateau slides southward, "the surrounding creep loads up around the one stuck patch, then boom! Earthquake," Bilham said.

Because this type of earthquake is so unusual, Bilham and colleagues used interferometric synthetic aperture radar, a type of satellite data, to confirm their suspicions. This type of radar uses microwaves to map a section of the Earth's surface at different times (in this case, the images were taken nearly 20 years apart), and then compares the two maps to very accurately measure seismic deformation and movement in the area.

"That sewed it up very nicely," Bilham said. His team's findings will appear in the February issue of the journal Nature Geoscience.

A caterpillar's crawl

The Kohat Plateau is creeping south at a speed of about 1 to 2 millimeters per year, Bilham said. Over the course of about 200 years, patches of the plateau can build up enough stress to cause localized earthquakes, like the one in 1992.

Over time, the plateau's movement is much like a caterpillar's crawl ? a combination of slow gliding and sudden jerks.

This type of earthquake will likely become more frequent in the region, Bilham said, as the plateau slowly squeezes out its underlying layer of lubricant. Although Bilham thinks this layer is likely salt, he says no one will know for sure until scientists drill below the plateau to take samples. But whatever it turns out to be, residents of the Kohat Plateau should hold on tight.

Golden Globes viewership off slightly from 2011 (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? All the hype surrounding British comedian Ricky Gervais's return to host Sunday night's Golden Globe awards and how he might tweak the sensibilities of the stars in attendance failed to boost the TV audience.

The star-studded Hollywood awards ceremony lured 16.8 million total viewers to the telecast, the NBC television network said on Monday. That was a slight dip from the 17 million who tuned in last year when Gervais ruffled feathers in the audience and drew poor reviews for caustic jokes about stars including Robert Downey, Jr. and Charlie Sheen.

Among the key viewer group of 18-to 49-years-old adults, the awards telecast drew a 5.0 rating, which again was slightly below last year's 5.2, according to NBC.

Gervais promised more of the same type of humor this year, and aimed his acid wit at Johnny Depp, Mel Gibson, Jodie Foster, Kim Kardashian and others. But his edge was decidedly less sharp this year, and for the most part, critics noticed.

"Despite all the tough talk leading to Sunday night's broadcast, it was a markedly respectful and restrained Ricky Gervais who showed up," TV critic Mary McNamara began her review in the Los Angeles Times

Writing for show business website TheWrap.com, Tim Molloy said "Gervais told solid jokes. But despite promises he wouldn't hold back, none were as harsh as the ones last year."

U.S. judge backs multiple rifle sales reporting (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? A U.S. judge on Friday refused to block new federal rules requiring gun dealers in four states bordering Mexico to report the sales of multiple semi-automatic rifles, a victory for the Obama administration.

The administration issued the reporting requirements last year despite opposition from the gun industry as part of a stepped-up effort to clamp down on the weapons flowing across the border to violent drug cartels in Mexico.

The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) ordered more than 8,000 gun dealers in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California to report the sale within five business days of two or more semiautomatic rifles to the same person.

That also includes rifles with a caliber greater than .22 and with the ability to accept a detachable magazine.

Mexican officials have complained bitterly about guns illegally coming from the United States. Tens of thousands of Mexicans have died in the drug wars since 2006 when the government there decided to take on the cartels.

Judge Rosemary Collyer, appointed to the bench by Republican President George W. Bush, found that the ATF's requirement was sufficiently narrowly tailored and that it was rational by focusing on the states that border Mexico.

"Congress has effected a delicate balance between ATF's regulation of firearms and the right to privacy held by lawful firearms owners," Collyer wrote in a 21-page ruling. The ATF's reporting requirement "did not disturb that balance."

Gun dealers backed by the National Rifle Association, a powerful lobbying organization, and the National Shooting Sports Foundation challenged the requirements arguing that it would effectively require national registration of firearms sales, which they said the ATF was not authorized to do.

The gun industry has also said that the rules will have no impact on the cartels but rather burden law-abiding retailers and that the reporting requirement was overly burdensome.

"If President (Barack) Obama gets a second term, I think law-abiding gun owners are going to see a lot more of it," Wayne LaPierre, executive vice president of the NRA, told Reuters.

"These drug cartels ... rape, they rob, they murder they throw people into lions' pits, they're not going to be deterred by a form. That must be some form," he said. The groups plan to appeal the ruling.

Some 36,000 reports of multiple handgun sales were made from the four border states in fiscal 2010, according to the ATF.

The decision came as the ATF has been under scrutiny in recent months after a sting operation to track guns being smuggled to Mexican cartels went awry.
